Chiefly correspondence, 1811-1860, from Tristram Verstille in S.C. and Georgia to his family in New York and Connecticut re business, politics, religious activities, and family affairs; letters describe life in Robertville (Beaufort District, S.C.), Savannah (Chatham County, Ga.), and elsewhere. Letter, 31 Sept. 1812, from Tristram Verstille (Black Swamp, S.C.), to his mother Eliza Verstille (New York), re his recent marriage and his fear about the war and its impact; 2 letters, 31 Dec. 1812 and 22 June 1819, Robertville, S.C., to Charlotte Lydia Sheldon Verstille, Salem, Mass., and Fayetteville, N.C., chastising his sister for not writing more regularly, urging her to have her portrait painted, commenting re a business venture with [Benjamin] Brooks, and advising her not to travel to Robertville before the first frost due to health conditions. Letter, 9 Feb. 1821, H. Edwards to C.L.S. Verstille, Robertville, S.C., re religious activity in Charleston, S.C., death of a local minister, and visiting the Edwards family. Letter, 4 June 1835, from Charlotte Lydia Sheldon Verstille, Savannah, Ga., to her sister Nancy O. Verstille, East Windsor, Conn., re religious activities, building a new Presbyterian church, a recent bank robbery, and murder trial involving bribes and jury tampering; related article re 1787 account book of William Verstille (b. 1757), an itinerant miniaturist and portrait artist of the 18th century. A native of Boston, this artist worked in Philadelphia, New York City, and Connecticut during the late 18th century (published in Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin, Jan. 1960; Vol. 25 : no. 1; pp. 22-26).
